KNOW YOUR SMARTPHONE PROCESSOR : ARM CORTEX,NM,CORES,FREQUENCY EXPLAINED

DO YOU KNOW YOUR PROCESSOR?: What is ARM Cortex,NM,CORES,FREQUENCY

mobile processors

We all use smartphone these days right! Every phone has a Processor do you ever wondered what are these terms like ARM Cortex, CORES, NM, FREQUENCY of a  Processor . I got the answer for you. I assure you that if you read this whole article you will definitely get to know about all the these terms, doesn't matter even if you don't have any technical knowledge.

So let's get started

What is an processor?

Basically the processor is heart your phone which performs all the tasks while you are using your phone and even when you are not using your device, it never sleeps. It does a lot of work so sometime this thought would have came to your mind that how does a processor works and What are these terms related to it.

What is ARM Cortex, nm, Dual core, Quad core,Hexa core, Octacore, Deca-core?.

To understand all these terms and the working of the processor let's take an example:

Let's assume we have a piece of land where you want build and office and where your your employees will work. This piece of land is the silicon wafer on which your processor will be designed.

Understand  what Cortex is

Now to build a new building on that piece of land you need an map, you can design a map by yourself but to make efficient use of your land you need an good architect. That Architect here for the smartphone processors is ARM. ARM full name is ADVANCE RISC MACHINES is an company which designs the map of your processors. And these maps are of different designs like Cortex A7, Cortex A15, Cortex A53, Cortex A57, Cortex A72 , Cortex A73, Cortex A75 etc. Here you can understand it by the bigger the number the better design for your building and better use of your piece of land. Like in some design there are confrence room two working rooms and on other design you can get three working rooms and a conference room so there are design for better use of the space.

Understanding the different CORES

You heard of dual core, quad core, octa-core right! Here you can understand it by no. Of cores are equal to no. Of floors of your building. Dual core means two floors, Quad core means 4 floors and octa-core means 8 floors so you are getting more working volume in that same piece of land.

Understand the NM

Now your building is ready and workers are alloted there work. So as your workers work in group so they have meet each other to discuss things and perform tasks. So here the thickness walls of the walls of the room is important. If thickness is high then there will be less working space and you wasted some amount working space of rooms due to high thickness of the walls so and employees have to travel a bit more whenever they are going to other rooms for work so it will consume more time and energy. Here the thickness of the walls is the NANOMETER Technology that smartphone processor makers use. So lesser the thickness faster will be the work and will consume less energy so more power efficient. These days smartphone's processor maker companies like SAMSUNG, QUALCOMM, HUAWEI, MEDIATEK,  are making processor based on 28nm, 26nm, 20nm( old technology) and now processors which are currently used are made on 14nm, 12nm, 11nm, 10nm, 8nm ,7nm( Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855+ and 855 and APPLE A13 Bionic chip) and currently HUWAEI is working on 5nm technology. So less the NM better the efficiency and speed. Our technology is developing and we are able to make those walls thicker year by year and  still making them strong enough to hold the weight of the whole building.

The Frequency of a Processor

Now building has walls floors and room but still one thing left the doors. If there are no doors  then there will be disturbance. And these doors here are machine operated doors. So when your staff will travel from from room to other they have to go through the door the Speed of the opening/closing of the doors will also affect how quickly your staff can go to one room to other. So here the speed of the doors is the frequency of the processor. You might have heard of 1.5Ghz , 2Ghz ,2.5Ghz so higher the frequency faster the speed but operating the doors at higher speed power required is also high.

So there is combination of higher cores and lower GHZ cores for different task. Means we have different speed doors at different floors. You must have heard about a smartphone processor which has some is an octacore in which some cores works at High frequency and some at low frequency so  the floor which requires to work fast has fast opening doors means have higher frequency for tasks like gaming and consume more power. And the floor which does not have a lot of work   has lower speed doors means has lower frequency so it consume less power.

So now i think that you must have understood how your smartphone's processor works what is Cortex, what are CORES and what is frequency. So as you have above it's not a single factor that affect an processor's performance higher core does not guarantee better performance. Similarly higher frequency alone can not give you best performance. All the factors are combined and work together and that give you the performance.
So now you have understood what type of Processor your smartphone has and from now whenever you will buy a new smartphone you will understand it's processor in every aspect and will not fall in for just High frequency or High cores.
