Sony PlayStation 5: performance, design, games, price, output ... everything we know about the next gen console

Sony will launch its PS5 in 2020 and is already starting to distill information on its next gen console. Here's all we know about the PlayStation 5, which will have to deal with Xbox Scarlett.

Sony PlayStation 5

Sony is working on the PlayStation 5 that will succeed the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013 and will face the Xbox Project Scarlett Microsoft. Scheduled for the end of 2020, the PS5 will offer ultra fast SSD storage, compatibility with ray tracing and a new controller.

PERFORMANCE: ULTRA FAST SSD STORAGE
From the beginning of the year 2019, Sony started distilling information on the PlayStation 5, and in particular on its technical characteristics.

We therefore know that the PS5 will integrate the following components:
  • AMD Ryzen processor (Zen 2, engraved in 7 nm)
  • AMD Navi graphics chip with support for 3D audio and ray tracing
  • fast flash SSD storage
  • 4K Blu-ray player (100GB discs)
Mark Cerny, in charge of the architecture of the PlayStation 5, has insisted many times on the performance advantage given by the replacement of a conventional hard drive with a super fast SSD. There is talk of going back to "cartridge time" with very short loading times and a much faster loading rate of content. This means, for example, that a racing game can give a greater sense of speed by loading the scenery more quickly.

The management of ray tracing will also be handled physically by the console, in the manner of Nvidia GeForce RTX. This should help to improve the realism of games, including lighting.

According to Sony, the graphics chip will be able to run games in 4K at 120 Hz.

Sony has also made announcements about the impact of its next console on the environment. The PlayStation 5 will consume no more than 0.5 W in standby (when an option is enabled).

PLAYSTATION 5 VS XBOX SCARLETT: WHAT WILL BE THE MOST PERFORMING CONSOLE?
It is not yet clear what will be the manufacturer to win the award for this new generation. It is clear that both consoles will be neck and neck, and the gap between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One should not be repeated.

RETROCOMPATIBILITY WITH PS4
Sony promised that the PlayStation 5 would be compatible with PS4 games. The firm subsequently tempered this promise by saying that it was primarily a project and not an insurance.

This is a crucial element that could allow Sony to quickly become the favorite for the next generation of console. Indeed, ensuring the backward compatibility of PS4 games allows the owners of this console to exchange for a PS5 without losing their game library.

THE PS5 LEVER
We do not yet know the look of the controller of the PS5, but we already know several things about the controller through announcements of Sony at the end of 2019. The controller would take over the overall design of the DualShock 4 (the controller of the PS4), but with new interesting and promising.

First novelty, the resistance of the triggers is dynamic, which allows the developer to reinforce it according to the situations. For example, one could feel the rope of a bow stretching and becoming more resistant to movement as our finger squeezes the trigger.

The new controller also incorporates a new more precise vibration system, which allows, while being conjugated with the built-in speaker, to feel textures of an element of the game.

Sony also takes the opportunity to switch his controller to the USB-C and integrate a larger battery. What hope for increased autonomy.

A patent application filing showed that Sony is working on a technology that allows a controller to connect directly to gaming servers, without going through the console, to reduce latency on its cloud gaming service (PlayStation Now). Nothing indicates for the moment that the controller of PS5 will benefit from it.

WHEN EXIT PLAYSTATION 5?
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will be released for the holiday season 2020. It will face the Xbox Scarlett whose release is scheduled for the same period.

RUMORS AND SPECULATION

THE GAMES IN RUMORS
Sony has not yet officially unveiled games planned for the PS5. Some games launched at the end of the PlayStation 4 could come out on PlayStation 5 with an improved version. We think for example of The Last of Us: Part 2 or Ghost of Tsushima.

Some developers have already announced projects for new generation consoles like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 at Bethesda.

WHAT DOES PLAYSTATION 5 LOOK LIKE?
The PlayStation 5 development kit has generated a lot of speculation about the design of the console in its commercial version. It must be remembered, however, that development kits very rarely, if ever, resemble marketed products.

We do not yet know what the PlayStation 5 will look like, but it is almost certain that the design of the development kit will not be retained for commercialization.

AT WHICH PRICE WILL THE PS5 BE SOLD?
Sony has promised that the price of the PlayStation 5 will be attractive. The PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 4 Pro were launched at 399 euros with great success. The PlayStation 3 was launched at 599 euros which proved to be a failure. It is therefore clear, with the statements of Sony, that the PlayStation 5 will be sold between 399 and 599 euros.
